Profile #1: Samuel’s Story
Samuel was a young man and professional when he came to believe in Christ. The son of a prominent Muslim leader in the local community, his faith was hidden at first. The day that Steve was killed, Samuel was on his way to meet with him, as they did regularly, to work on a project. Once police started digging around Steve’s belongings, they found Samuel’s written testimony. Samuel was soon arrested and tortured in prison, all the while refusing to give up the identities of other Christians. His family was able to get him out of prison, but when they took him home, they also tried to get him to denounce Christ and return to Islam. When he refused, Samuel’s family disowned him instead of following through with the honor killing that was expected. Samuel now has found a humble space in which to live and try to make a living. When we asked, “How has he handled all the suffering and persecution?” the answer was surprising: “He’s baptized six more people and started three more house churches.”
Profile #2: Martin’s story
Martin is an older man by local standards. He became a Christian many long years ago and has led many to Christ. Years ago, he spent two years in jail because of his faith. In his patriarchal society, he worries that he does not have a son to take care of him in his later years. But he is quick to point out the sacrifices that all of the group have made. They have all done jail time; they have all lost family members.
Profile #3: Issac’s Story
Issac was in an arranged marriage when he came to Christ. Over time, he took his wife to house church and introduced her to the Gospel. He felt that she was close to professing faith in Him when the government crackdown began. When their child died tragically, his wife blamed his religion and told their families of his Christianity. Her father took her away from Issac. During the crackdown, Issac’s best friend and mentor had to flee for his own safety, and Issac hasn’t heard from him since.
When Issac was at the depth of his depression over losing his family and friends – all the support he’d had – he clung to his faith in God. It was Issac who first got back in touch with MMR.
Profile #4: Lydia’s Story
Lydia was led to Christ by her brother. When her husband found out, he left her. With no way of making money, she often depended on her brother for income, but now even he cannot work due to the persecution. She often goes hungry so that their meager food can go to her children.
